Christmas presents with a voice of their own
In the UK and Ireland, children open their presents on Christmas morning; in Denmark, Austria and Germany, on Christmas Eve. Whenever the paper comes off, a hand puppet soon has a name, and by Boxing Day it may already have starred in its first puppet show.
Which puppet for which child?
For babies and toddlers there are soft baby hand puppets from The Puppet Company, Sterntaler and HABA; the age recommendation is listed on each product. Nursery-age children enjoy animals with a movable mouth that can answer back. Older children and adults who like to perform often choose a stage puppet or a cast of Punch and Judy puppets.
Four brands at a glance
Folkmanis models its animals closely on nature. Living Puppets is known for expressive faces and also makes Sesame Street characters such as Elmo and Cookie Monster. The Puppet Company, a British firm, makes many animals as both hand and finger puppets, and munabo makes the cast of the traditional German Kasperle theatre.
Nativity plays and the nursery group
For a nativity play, nurseries and schools often need a donkey, a sheep and a camel, and all three are available as hand puppets and as finger puppets. Puppets from the same series match in size and style.
