At the Scottish estate of Guisachan, Lord Tweedmouth mated a yellow retriever named Nous with Belle, a Tweed water spaniel — a breed that no longer exists. The dogs were bred to retrieve wildfowl, and the work still shows: a dense water-repellent coat, a strong tail that steers in the water, and a marked drive to search and carry. Males stand 56 to 61 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh around 30 kilograms. Puppies are born at roughly 400 grams and do not open their eyes until they are almost a fortnight old.
