Folkmanis Pack Rat Hand Puppet

Even if you find the real thing creepy, this roly-poly rat puppet will win you over. With soft fur, expressive eyes and a little twitchy nose and tail, he can be shy or bold, cautious or curious. With his detachable pack he can collect to his heart's content.

The pack rat belongs to the genus Neotoma and lives across the dry west of North America, among rock crevices, cacti and desert scrub. Its furred tail, large ears and soft coat set it well apart from the grey brown rat of city drains. Leaves, seeds, fruit and cactus flesh make up the diet, and almost all the water it needs comes from that food alone. The name comes from the structure it piles up over generations: a nest of twigs, cactus joints, bones, pebbles and anything that glitters. While carrying one item it will often drop it for something better encountered on the way, which earned it the second nickname of trade rat.

Did you know that these nests count among the finest climate archives in North America? The animals' urine cements the hoard into a hard dark mass that survives tens of thousands of years in dry rock shelters. Researchers read from it which plants grew on that exact spot during the last ice age.
