Otters of the subfamily Lutrinae live along undisturbed rivers, lakes and coastal stretches with dense bankside vegetation and plenty of cover. They dig their den, known as a holt, into the riverbank, usually with an entrance below the waterline. Fish make up the bulk of their diet, topped up with crabs, molluscs and the occasional small vertebrate. Depending on the species, adults reach a body length of 60 to 90 centimetres, plus a powerful, muscular tail adding a further 30 to 45 centimetres. Hunting in cold water burns a lot of energy, so otters eat a substantial share of their own body weight every day.
