Owls (order Strigiformes) hunt in almost every landscape on earth, from boreal forest to semi-desert. Their eyes are fixed in the skull, which is why the neck turns through some 270 degrees. The stiff feathers of the facial disc work as a funnel and steer every sound to the ear openings, set at different heights in some species. Mice, rats, small birds and insects are usually swallowed whole. Whatever cannot be digested comes back up later as a pellet.
Did you know that the leading edge of an owl's wing is finely toothed? The comb breaks the airflow into small eddies, so barely a sound reaches the ground below. Fishing owls, which have no need of that stealth, have lost the comb again.
