Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are born in the depth of the Arctic winter, inside a chamber the mother digs into a snowdrift. A newborn weighs no more than a guinea pig, arrives blind and wears only a thin coat of down. About a third of her milk is fat, so by spring the cubs are strong enough to follow her onto the pack ice. They stay at her side for roughly two and a half years, learning to follow the ice as it retreats far north each summer.
Did you know that polar bear cubs first leave the den in March or April? For several days they stay close to the entrance, sliding down slopes and ducking back inside, before the family sets off for the sea ice.
