Folkmanis Harbor Seal Hand Puppet

You do not need to journey to our oceans' coasts to experience the beauty of the harbour seal. This adorable hand puppet has such a heartwarming, soulful face it is hard to put down. Big, black eyes, soft whiskers and a coat of silky plush make this one an outright favourite.

The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) lives along the cool coasts of the northern hemisphere, in Europe chiefly on the Wadden Sea sandbanks and the rocky shores of the North Atlantic. Adults reach some 1.8 metres and weigh between 65 and 130 kilograms, the females staying smaller than the bulls. They hunt flatfish, herring, crabs and squid, staying under for half an hour at a stretch, because the heartbeat drops to a few beats a minute during a dive. Those whiskers are working equipment: they pick up the wake a fish has left seconds earlier and steer the seal to it through murky water. For resting and moulting the animals haul out onto sandbanks, lying in loose groups with head and hind flippers raised.

Did you know that a harbour seal pup swims and dives within hours of being born? It sheds its woolly first coat before birth, so it is ready for the water the moment it arrives on the sandbank. Four weeks of rich milk are enough to double its weight, and a pup that loses touch with its mother calls after her with a wail that carries far across the flats.
