Folkmanis Old English Sheepdog Hand Puppet

He pants, he barks, he snaps at flies, he wags his tail and he tilts his head quizzically. He sniffs your sleeve and makes your friends believe he is real – all with your help, of course. A hidden entrance and long fur keep your part of the act a secret. The Folkmanis Old English Sheepdog hand puppet has been among the most played figures in the range since its release.

The Old English Sheepdog comes from the west of England, where it drove cattle and sheep to market rather than herding them across open hills. Its coat combines a coarse outer layer with dense undercoat, which kept the working dog dry through long days of rain and wind. Watch one move and you notice the rolling, bear-like gait, produced by the legs on one side swinging almost together. Dogs of the breed (Canis lupus familiaris) are known for their patience, though they grow restless without a job to do. The deep, resonant bark carries a long way across a field – useful when the flock was out of sight.

Did you know the breed owes its nickname to a tax? In eighteenth-century England working dogs were exempt from the dog tax, and a docked or „bobbed“ tail served as proof that an animal earned its keep with the flock. Tails stay on today; the name Bobtail stayed too.
