Punch - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler
Sterntaler baby hand puppet Kasper, red pointed hat with a bell and a blue-and-red suit with yellow buttons
When the curtain opens, Kasper asks ‘Seid ihr alle da?’ – ‘Are you all there?’ – and the children shout back as one. The Punch hand puppet by Sterntaler is the German Kasper, the title character the whole genre is named after. His red pointed cap and smiling fabric face make him instantly the figure children know from Kasperle shows.
Kasper grew out of European improvised stage comedy and is related to the Italian Pulcinella and the English Punch. In Vienna, the actor Johann Josef Laroche created the character in the 18th century as successor to the older Hanswurst. His strength is native wit: he talks his way out of every tight spot and has an idea ready for every opponent.
Did you know that a Viennese theatre was once named after him in everyday speech? Laroche’s Kasperl was so popular at the Leopoldstädter Theater that for half a century people simply called the house the ‘Kasperltheater’.
