Princess - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler

In play, the princess no longer has to wait for someone to rescue her. Children today often take on the role themselves and let her do whatever suits the story at hand. The princess hand puppet by Sterntaler wears a golden yellow crown and a pink dress. On Sterntaler’s CD ‘Kasperle-Geschichten 3’ she appears in all eight stories, and who plays the other roles is up to you.

In traditional German Kasperle theatre, the princess is usually a delicate figure under threat who needs rescuing. Over recent decades this image has shifted: newer adaptations and picture books increasingly show princesses who act for themselves and shape their own story. With the hand puppet, this shift is easy to act out: the princess can simply deal with the danger herself.

Did you know that princesses who take matters into their own hands are no invention of recent decades? As early as the nineteenth century, Hedwig Dohm wrote a fairy tale in which the princess stands up to her father and chooses her own path. That was long before the feminist fairy tale scholarship of the 1980s took up the subject anew.
