Donkey Emmi - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler

Named characters stick in the memory: bring Donkey Emmi on stage today, and the same Emmi can come back tomorrow, with the children remembering the last episode. The donkey hand puppet Emmi by Sterntaler is grey with a pale muzzle and wears a colourful neckerchief. As a donkey, Emmi comes with a part every child knows: in the tale of the Bremen Town Musicians, the donkey is the first to set off.

The domestic donkey (Equus asinus) descends from the African wild ass and was domesticated in East Africa more than 7,000 years ago. Depending on breed, it stands between 80 and 160 centimetres at the withers; animals up to 100 centimetres are called miniature donkeys, those from 120 centimetres upwards large donkeys. Donkeys thrive on far more fibrous food than horses – hay, straw and woody shrubs – and can go longer without water. They can live for more than 40 years.

Did you know that donkeys work as livestock guardians? They stand up to foxes and stray dogs with real determination, braying loudly and kicking out with their hooves. That is why shepherds like to keep a donkey with their sheep to watch over the flock.
