When the dragon steps onto the stage, a hush falls over the audience. The dragon hand puppet by Sterntaler is built for exactly that entrance: green plush, a strong-jawed muzzle and wide-spreading red wings. Thrust its head forward and let it hiss, and the threat is complete.
The dragon is one of the oldest figures in European legend, where for centuries it has been the threat a hero must prove himself against. In the Nibelungenlied, Siegfried has slain a dragon and bathed in its blood, which made him almost invulnerable. In the legend of Saint George, the knight frees a princess by defeating the beast.
Did you know that the wings alone mark this figure out as a European dragon? East Asian dragons are usually shown without wings, with a long, serpent-like body. In China and Japan they are traditionally bringers of luck and rain and symbols of power, while in European legend the dragon is a monster to be defeated.
