Emergency workers in full gear often look frightening to small children – as a hand puppet, the firefighter becomes a familiar figure. The firefighter hand puppet by Sterntaler wears a yellow helmet. On Sterntaler’s CD ‘Kasperle-Geschichten 2’ he appears in two stories, and the other roles can be played by any hand puppets you have.
In early years education, role play has long been considered a reliable way to make unfamiliar or intimidating situations approachable for children. Figures from working life such as the firefighter therefore feature in many nurseries’ themed weeks about jobs, often shortly before a visit to a real fire station. Playing with the hand puppet rehearses what children will meet later – without any lecturing, simply through the role.
Did you know that full-time fire brigades in Germany only date back to the middle of the 19th century? Berlin founded one of the first professional fire brigades in the German-speaking world in 1851, and many other cities only followed much later with their own permanent stations.
