Description
A conversation needs two voices, and in German Kasperle theatre the second one is usually Gretel. The Gretel hand puppet by Sterntaler wears a headscarf that marks her out at a glance. She is the one who asks questions, talks back and is the reason a conversation with Kasper happens at all.
In Kasperle theatre Gretel is no minor character standing beside Kasper, but a figure in her own right. She asks the questions that move the plot along, objects when Kasper acts too rashly, and often supplies the twist a story needs. Without that second voice, many scenes would remain monologues.
Did you know that Gretel is Judy's German cousin? In Punch and Judy, Judy plays the same part and answers Punch back. Judy herself was originally called Joan.
