Alligators (Alligatoridae) form their own family within the order of crocodilians, and the best known of them is the American alligator. It lives in swamps, lakes and slow-moving rivers across the south-eastern United States, especially Florida and Louisiana. Adult males can reach lengths of up to four metres and weigh over 300 kilograms, making them considerably larger than most crocodile species found in Asia and Africa. Its broad, U-shaped snout sets it apart at a glance from true crocodiles, whose jaws taper to a narrower, V-shaped point.
Did you know that alligators can dramatically slow their heart rate to just one or two beats per minute while diving underwater? This allows them to stay submerged for extended periods as they stalk their prey.
