Folkmanis White Bunny Hand Puppet

Running to his burrow or nibbling on the garden, the soft and timid bunny is a favourite animal of young children. This bunny puppet is just the right size for cuddling, whether on or off the hand of mom or dad.

Every domestic rabbit descends from a single species, the European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The Romans kept them in walled enclosures called leporaria and took them aboard ship. When exactly they turned into domestic animals cannot be pinned to a century. Medieval France and England kept them in large fenced warrens, and deliberate selection for colour, size and temperament only set in during the early modern period. What is certain is that dogs, cattle and sheep have lived alongside people for far longer.

Did you know that wild rabbits can see almost all the way round without turning their heads? Their eyes sit high on the sides of the skull, leaving a blind spot only right in front of the nose. White domestic rabbits like this one owe their coat to centuries of selective breeding, not to camouflage.
