Special plush gives this Porcupine puppet the appearance of having quills, but never fear! While she may poke about, she won’t poke you! Hand enters from chest area to animate all four legs and the head.
North American porcupines (Erethizontidae) spend much of the year up in the trees of the woodland they inhabit. They climb slowly and deliberately, bracing themselves with a muscular tail. Bark, buds and leaves make up most of the diet, and a single tree can feed one animal for weeks. They forage at night and on their own, then doze the day away in a rock crevice or a fork of branches.
Did you know that a porcupine cannot shoot its quills? The story is old and persistent, yet the 30,000 or so modified hairs only come loose on contact. Microscopic barbs at the tip let a quill slide in easily and make it very hard to draw out again.
