King - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler

In a fairy tale, a king does not need to do much himself for the story to move: a single sentence from him is enough to send others on their way. The king hand puppet by Sterntaler wears a golden yellow crown and a red robe with cream-coloured plush trim. Whether he rules sternly or kindly is entirely up to whoever plays him.

In fairy tales the king often stands for a promise kept. In the Brothers Grimm's ‘The Frog King’, the princess will not open the door to the frog, although she promised to let him eat at her table. Her father stands firm: ‘What you have promised, you must keep.’ So it is the king who drives the story on against his own daughter's wishes. With a hand puppet this is easy to act out: the king listens, weighs things up and has the final word.

Did you know that the pale fur trim on royal robes was usually ermine in real life? From the Middle Ages, the stoat's white winter coat, dotted with the animals' black tail tips, was seen as a sign of purity and was long reserved for rulers and high dignitaries. In England, a sumptuary law under Edward III already limited fine furs to the royal family, the nobility and senior clergy, and ermine can still be seen on coronation robes today.
