Folkmanis Duckling Hand Puppet

It is a classic springtime sight, a line of fluffy yellow ducklings waddling after mum. Operate the beak and wings of this baby duckling puppet for a little springtime all year round.

Ducklings hatch ready to go: eyes open, covered in down, and following their mother to the water within hours. The domestic duck descends from the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), whose young search the reedy shallows for insects, snails and seeds. The down stays waterproof thanks to oil from the mother's preen gland, which the ducklings pick up as they shelter under her and work through their own plumage. Safety comes from staying close to the mother, who sounds a warning at pike, heron and bird of prey alike. Only after about eight weeks have the flight feathers grown enough to lift them off the water.

Did you know that a duckling takes the first sizeable moving thing it sees to be its mother? Konrad Lorenz described this imprinting in the 1930s and was duly seen walking through his village with a line of goslings behind him. The window is short: whatever is learnt in the first hours after hatching cannot be unlearnt later.
