Armadillos are peculiar New World mammals, found only in the Americas. The amusing Folkmanis armadillo puppet represents the colours, patterns and banding found on these unusual critters. Custom printed on soft-boa fabric with a 'pine-needle' hairy belly, the ingenious design curls up and secures with magnets. Use all five fingers to animate the legs and head.
Armadillos (Cingulata) are the only mammals whose backs are armoured with bony plates beneath a horny outer layer. Their range runs from the grasslands of Argentina up into the southern United States. Nose to the ground, they hunt out ants, termites and beetle grubs, rounding the meal off with roots and fallen fruit. Eyesight is poor, the sense of smell excellent, and with powerful digging claws they can vanish into the soil in seconds. Their rambling burrows are later taken over by rabbits, snakes and owls; since armadillos tolerate neither heat nor cold well, they forage by night in summer and around midday in winter.
Did you know that by no means every armadillo can roll into a ball? Of some twenty species, only the two three-banded armadillos of South America manage it, thanks to the gaps their shell leaves along the edges. The rest press themselves flat against the ground or simply dig their way out of trouble.
