Folkmanis Mini Barn Owl Finger Puppet

With her pretty heart-shaped face and big black eyes, this miniature barn owl finger puppet seeks a perch atop your finger. Whooo could be cuter?

The barn owl (Tyto alba) ranks among the most widely distributed birds on earth, absent only from Antarctica and the far north. It breeds in barns, church towers, hollow trees and rock crevices, and builds no nest of its own. That white heart-shaped facial disc works as a funnel, gathering sound and channelling it towards ear openings set at different heights on either side of the skull. From the tiny gap in arrival time between one ear and the other, the bird works out exactly where a mouse sits in the grass. Hunting is done on a low quartering flight over meadows and rough ground, mainly for voles, wood mice and shrews.

Did you know that a barn owl flies almost without sound? A fine comb runs along the leading edge of the flight feathers, and the surface of each feather is velvety. A soft fringe at the trailing edge breaks up the turbulence that would otherwise hiss. A mouse rarely notices the owl until it is directly overhead.
