The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) roams savannah, open woodland and scrubland across sub-Saharan Africa, often in search of water. Its large, fan-shaped ears do more than aid hearing: they also help regulate body temperature by releasing excess heat. As a pure herbivore, an adult eats up to 150 kilograms of grasses, leaves, bark and fruit every day. With a trunk containing over 40,000 muscles, it can pluck delicate leaves or haul whole branches, guiding both to its mouth. Because plant food is hard to digest, an elephant spends much of the day simply eating.
