Pygmy owls (Glaucidium) rank among the smallest owls in the world, and in the conifer forests of western North America a full-grown bird weighs barely seventy grams. Unlike most owls it hunts at dusk and in broad daylight, usually from a raised perch from which it drops on its prey in a short dive. Insects and mice make up much of the diet, along with a surprising number of songbirds that match the owl for weight. Its call is a run of single, evenly spaced whistles, used to mark out a territory and recognised at once by every woodland bird within earshot.
Did you know that a pygmy owl appears to have two faces? Two dark, pale-rimmed feather patches sit on the back of its neck and pass for a second pair of eyes from a few metres away. An attacker coming from behind believes it has been spotted and hesitates - time enough for the owl to leave.
