Often celebrated as a top contender in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, the Chinese Crested Dog is a breed whose quirky looks hide a heart full of sweetness. With soft, speckled skin and wispy hair sprouting from all the right places, this darling Folkmanis Chinese Crested Dog hand puppet looks strikingly true to breed. A movable mouth and a lazy tongue make its spirited personality shine. It is a fine reminder that being wonderfully weird is its own kind of beautiful.
The Chinese Crested is a small companion dog and comes in two forms: hairless apart from crest, paws and tail tip, or fully coated as the powderpuff. Despite the name, the breed's roots are thought to lie in Africa or Central America; Chinese sailors took the little dogs aboard as ratters and spread them along the trade routes. Bare skin feels warm to the touch and is sensitive to strong sun. In character the Crested is lively, affectionate and firmly attached to its people. It barks little but misses nothing.
Did you know that coat and teeth in the Chinese Crested are governed by one and the same gene? A change in FOXI3 removes the hair and interferes with tooth development, which is why hairless dogs often lack several teeth. An embryo carrying two copies of the trait does not survive, so every hairless dog also carries the gene for a coat. Pairing two hairless dogs therefore keeps producing coated powderpuff puppies.
