A change in FOXI3 removes the hair and interferes with tooth development, which is why hairless dogs often lack several teeth. An embryo carrying two copies of the trait does not survive, so every hairless dog also carries the gene for a coat. Pairing two hairless dogs therefore keeps producing coated powderpuff puppies.
