The long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus) lives in deciduous and mixed woodland, in parks and overgrown gardens right across Europe and Asia. It weighs barely more than nine grams, and its tail is longer than the rest of the bird, working as a rudder among thin twigs. Small insects, spiders and aphids are picked from the tips of branches, often while hanging upside down. In winter, family parties roam together and huddle side by side along a branch at night. Despite the name, it belongs to a family of its own rather than to the true tits.
Did you know that the long-tailed tit builds one of the most elaborate nests in Europe? Moss, lichen and spider silk are worked into a closed, elastic purse that stretches as the brood grows. Some two thousand feathers line the inside. Construction can take three weeks, and a Victorian ornithologist who took an old nest apart counted 2,379 feathers.
