Crafted with a delightful mix of textural fabrics plus iridescent wings, this not so menacing character will steal the show, but not your blood.
More than 3,500 mosquito species (Culicidae) have been described, and every continent except Antarctica has its own. The larvae develop in water, in pools, ditches and even a forgotten rain barrel. Adults of both sexes live on nectar and plant juices; only the females need blood as well, for the protein and iron their eggs require. A single female lays several batches of up to 200 eggs. She finds a host by exhaled carbon dioxide, by body heat and by the scent of skin.
Did you know that mosquitoes fly a duet before mating? Females hum at around 400 vibrations per second and males at roughly 600. When the two meet, both adjust their wingbeat until the harmonics line up at about 1,200 hertz. Only once that shared tone holds does mating follow.
