Folkmanis Toad Hand Puppet

It is not easy being green, unless you are the Folkmanis toad hand puppet. A textured, warty plush body and wide open eyes set the scene, and a workable mouth, forelegs and even a tongue do the rest. Anything that strays too close to the table edge is fair game.

True toads (Bufonidae) spend most of the year on land and return to water only to breed. Their hind legs are shorter than a frog's, so they walk and make short hops rather than long leaps. Hunting begins at dusk: whatever moves and fits in the mouth is taken by a sticky tongue in a fraction of a second – beetles, slugs, worms, woodlice. A single common toad accounts for dozens of prey animals in one summer night, which is why gardeners are glad to have one in the borders. By day it sits hidden under wood, leaf litter or a flat stone.

Did you know that toads shed their skin regularly and eat it on the spot? The old layer comes away in strips, the animal pulls it towards its mouth with the forelegs and swallows it down. Nothing is left behind, and no predator finds a clue that a toad was ever there.
