The grey wolf (Canis lupus) once ranged more widely than any other land predator, from the forests of Canada across the Russian taiga to the semi-deserts of Arabia. A pack holds anything from a hundred to well over a thousand square kilometres and marks the boundaries by scent. Hunting is a joint effort, with moose, deer and wild sheep at the top of the northern menu, filled out by beaver, rodents and carrion. After a successful hunt a single adult can eat nine kilograms at a sitting and then go for days without a meal. Timber wolf is the name given to the heavy, dark-coated wolves of the North American conifer forests.

Journeys of several hundred kilometres are on record, crossing the territories of other packs, rivers and motorways alike.
