Bears (Ursidae) span eight species across the Americas, Europe and Asia. They range from the sun bear at little more than 60 kilograms to the brown bear (Ursus arctos), which also has the widest range of them all. The heaviest wild Kodiak bear ever measured, a brown bear form from Kodiak Island, weighed 751 kilograms. In Europe most animals live in the Carpathians, and a genetic census put Romania alone at 10,400 to 12,800 bears in 2025. Despite their bulk, brown bears run at up to 50 kilometres per hour. Their diet is mostly plants: grasses, roots, nuts and berries, with salmon in summer. The eyes are small, yet bears see better than was long assumed, about as sharply as a person and in colour; the nose still outclasses everything, and nothing escapes it.
Did you know that bears leave messages for each other on trees? At so-called rub trees they rub their backs, bite the bark and leave scent behind; other bears can tell from it who has passed this way before them. Some of these trees serve many animals in turn, year after year and across bear generations.
