The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) belongs to the mustelid family and is the most water-adapted member of its genus in Europe. With a head-to-body length of 60 to 90 centimetres and a weight of five to ten kilogrammes, it ranks among Germany's largest mustelids after the badger. Its muscular tail serves as a rudder while swimming. Otters are mainly nocturnal and patrol territories of up to 40 kilometres along rivers, lakes and coastal stretches. Around 70 per cent of their diet consists of fish, supplemented by crayfish, frogs and waterbirds. In Germany, the otter was long threatened with extinction but is slowly recovering in some regions.

Did you know that the Eurasian otter has the densest fur of any native wild animal? A single square centimetre of skin carries up to 80,000 hairs — by comparison, a human scalp manages just 200 per square centimetre. This extreme density traps a thin layer of air between the hairs, insulating the otter and keeping it dry while diving. Unlike seals, it has no need for a layer of blubber beneath the skin.
