Dormouse Hand Puppet - Hansa Creation

As part of imaginative play, the dormouse hand puppet by Hansa Creation can quickly take on its own role. It works well in puppet theatre, in story based play and in small role playing scenes. New ideas often emerge while playing.

The dormouse's tail is about 25 cm long.

The edible dormouse (Glis glis) inhabits Europe's deciduous forests and is renowned for its extraordinarily long hibernation — up to seven months, from September to May. During this period, its heart rate drops from 300 to just 5 beats per minute. It is nocturnal and climbs effortlessly on trees and walls thanks to special sole pads that function like suction cups. It feeds on beechnuts, acorns and nuts and can live up to 9 years.

Did you know that the dormouse genuinely owes its German name to its sleep? The seven months of winter dormancy gave it the name "Siebenschläfer" (seven-sleeper) — the ancient Romans, meanwhile, fattened them as a delicacy in special clay pots called "gliraria".
