The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) inhabits the rainforests of Central Africa and is considered the most colourful mammal in the world. Males weigh 20 to 30 kilograms and bear the most striking colours: blue and violet cheek ridges, a vivid red nose and golden beard hair. Mandrills live in groups of around 20 individuals, are omnivores and can reach speeds of 40 km/h.
Did you know that the colours on a mandrill's face indicate its rank? The more dominant the male, the more intensely the blues and reds glow — subordinate animals are paler. The face functions as a living business card.
