The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) inhabits the high mountains of Central Asia at elevations up to 5,500 metres. Its dense fur insulates against extreme cold, while its long tail serves as a balancing pole and warmth protector for the nose. A solitary hunter, it preys on ibex, blue sheep and marmots. Only 4,000 to 6,500 individuals remain in the wild.
