Rosie the deer - Waldis - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler

Sterntaler groups several woodland animals in its Waldis range, and Rosie the deer is the shy one among them. The deer hand puppet Rosie by Sterntaler is made of light brown plush and wears a pink bow at the neck. If you are planning a woodland topic – seasons, animal tracks, who lives where – Rosie is the figure for the quiet scenes.

The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is Europe's commonest and smallest deer species. Adults measure 107 to 127 centimetres in body length and stand 65 to 84 centimetres at the shoulder; bucks weigh 20 to 34 kilograms and does 17 to 29 kilograms. Roe deer are choosy ruminants, picking out protein-rich buds, herbs and shoots rather than grazing grass wholesale. In summer a roe deer lives alone, or as a doe with her fawns. In winter they gather in small groups, and in open farmland in herds of more than twenty animals. Only bucks grow antlers, and these stay comparatively small.

Did you know that roe deer fawns keep their spotted coat for only a few weeks? The reddish-brown juvenile coat has white spots along the back and flanks that barely show in the dappled light of the undergrowth. Adult roe deer rely on cover too: when startled, a roe deer does not run far but slips into the nearest thicket in a few quick bounds.
