The Queen: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. A wine-red robe with a chain and red stone, the crown resting on grey hair: that is how the Queen hand puppet comes on stage. She is made by hand in a Czech workshop that builds all its figures by hand. Her soft fabric head is embroidered, hand-shaped and artistically hand-painted, which gives every queen an expression of her own. Because she weighs so little, she suits children's hands as well as adults'.
The queen can be played as a ruler in her own right: she may pass judgement, give an order or take Kasper to task. How far she intervenes is up to the performer. Set against a king who weighs things up, she is the one who decides. She carries a scene on her own as well: a queen who demands order gives any story its frame.
Did you know that one of the best-known queens in fairy tales solves her own problem? In Rumpelstiltskin it is the young queen who spends three days hunting for the little man's name, sends a messenger out across the land and finally speaks the right name aloud. The king barely appears after the opening. For the puppet stage that is a ready-made model: a queen who takes matters into her own hands.
