Prince (dark blue) - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler
Sterntaler baby hand puppet prince, yellow crown, navy jacket with yellow buttons and a red belt
A royal court can only be staged once several characters appear together. The prince hand puppet by Sterntaler is made for exactly this kind of ensemble play: a dark blue doublet and a golden yellow crown.
This prince is less the questing hero than part of a royal court. Alongside the king, the queen and the princess, he makes up a group of characters who can fill whole palace scenes. In German Kasperle theatre the king and the princess are stock characters, and the prince and the queen round out the rest of the court.
Did you know that the word ‘prince’ goes back to the Latin princeps, meaning roughly ‘the one in first place’? Originally the title meant a ruling prince, in other words the ruler himself. Only later did it come to mean the son who ranks after the king.
