The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) lives in the mountain forests of central China and feeds 99 per cent on bamboo. Despite having a bear's dentition, it is an almost exclusive herbivore. Pandas spend up to 14 hours daily eating to extract sufficient nutrients from the low-calorie bamboo. Thanks to intensive conservation efforts, the population has risen to over 1,800 individuals.
