The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) lives exclusively in the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. It sleeps up to 22 hours a day because its eucalyptus diet is extremely low in energy. Koalas eat leaves from only about 50 of over 700 eucalyptus species. They possess a unique fingerprint that is strikingly similar to a human's. The population is in sharp decline due to habitat loss and bushfires.
Did you know that koala joeys must eat their mother's caecal content to survive? This so-called "pap" contains bacteria essential for digesting the toxic eucalyptus leaves — without this starter culture, young koalas could not process their food.
