The Shiba Inu is the smallest of Japan's six native breeds and comes from the mountains of central Honshu, where it was worked for centuries on birds and small game. A coarse outer coat over dense undercoat keeps out the mountain weather, while the curled tail and compact frame make the dog recognisable at a glance. In temperament it is independent, fastidious and reserved with strangers, which is why it is so often said to behave like a cat. Japan declared the breed a national natural monument in 1936. The war very nearly finished it off a few years later, and today's population traces back to three bloodlines found in remote valleys.
