Shy and nocturnal, the Folkmanis ringtail cat hand puppet comes out of the shadows for puppetry playtime. With features like a raccoon, animate the mouth to give this captivating creature its own personality.
The ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) is no cat at all, but a member of the raccoon family and a close relative of the raccoon itself. Rocky canyons, semi-deserts and oak woodland across the south-western United States and Mexico are its home. Rodents, insects and birds fill the menu, joined by plenty of berries in late summer. When climbing, it rotates the hind feet through 180 degrees and runs down rock faces head first. Narrow chimneys are no obstacle either, since it braces fore and hind legs against opposite walls.
Did you know that gold prospectors once called the ringtail a miner's cat? The animals moved into cabins and mine shafts, kept the mice down and were welcome for it. Arizona named the ringtail its official state mammal in 1986.
