The word skunk comes from Algonquian and was borrowed by the first European settlers, who had no name of their own for the animal. For a long time skunks were filed away with the weasels and martens; genetic work in the 1990s finally gave them a family of their own, the Mephitidae. Their spray is built on thiols, the same group of compounds added to natural gas so that a leaking pipe announces itself. A few drops carry for several hundred metres.
