Folkmanis Horned Lizard Hand Puppet

With an armour of horns and a flat, roundish body, the horned lizard lies in plain sight, camouflaged amidst the deserts and semi-arid terrain of North and Central America. This distinctive reptile looks like a cross between a dinosaur and a toad. The movable mouth and forelegs of the Folkmanis Horned Lizard hand puppet let you copy its courtship, bobbing the head while doing press-ups.

Horned lizards (genus Phrynosoma) live on open sandy ground from the south-western United States down into Mexico. Harvester ants are the staple, several hundred picked up by one lizard in a day, which is what the broad body makes room for. The crown of horns and the spiny scales along the flanks make the lizard an awkward mouthful for many predators. In the cold it buries itself in sand; in the heat it seeks shade beneath shrubs. Fine channels between the scales guide dew and rainwater to the mouth.

Did you know that some horned lizards squirt blood from the corners of their eyes when hard pressed? The jet carries over a metre and tastes so foul that dogs and coyotes let go at once. Birds are unmoved by it, and against them only stillness helps.
