Doctor - hand puppet for babies by Sterntaler
Sterntaler baby hand puppet doctor, white coat with a turquoise collar, stethoscope and round glasses
Description
Some children like to rehearse a trip to the doctor before their own appointment – the doctor hand puppet by Sterntaler is made for exactly that. He wears a white coat and a stethoscope. In ‘people who help us’ role play at nursery, children happily swap parts: patient one minute, doctor the next.
In Punch and Judy the Doctor is one of the classic figures. In nursery play, though, he stands above all for free role play. He shows what happens at the doctor's: listening to the chest, looking in the mouth and a plaster to finish. Something unfamiliar becomes something you have already played through.
Did you know that the white coat worn by doctors is not actually all that old? Until the late nineteenth century, physicians mostly wore dark, heavy clothing, which was then considered serious and dignified. Only around the turn of the century, as bacteriology changed awareness of hygiene, did light-coloured clothing take hold, and it has been associated with the medical profession ever since.
