Every good story needs an antagonist, and in German Kasperle theatre the devil is one of the best known. The devil hand puppet by Sterntaler shows him with black curly hair and horns – striking enough to be recognised at once as the tempter.
He lures Kasper into mischief, promises riches or power, and still loses in the end to Kasper's wit and courage. He was already a stock character on the fairground stages where Kasperle theatre grew up. In Punch and Judy, too, the Devil comes for Punch and is beaten. Children know beforehand how it will end – and enjoy the shivers all the more for it.
Did you know that the devil causes trouble twice on Sterntaler's CD Kasperle-Geschichten 3? He plays a part in ‘Ein Zauberer, ein Teufel und ein geheimes Kraut’ (A Wizard, a Devil and a Secret Herb). In ‘Der gierige Teufel’ (The Greedy Devil) he is the title character.
